Univeristy of Warwick logoThe University of Warwick – The Warwick Commission on Elected Mayors and City Leadership

This top ten university – RJF’s founding client – appointed us to act as the Secretariat to The Warwick Commission on Elected Mayors and City Leadership. Following the passing of the Localism Act 2011, the Commission set out to answer the key question: “What is the role of elected mayors in providing strategic leadership to cities?” The Commission provided an evidence base ahead of the vote in May 2012 across the major English cities on a potential change in leadership model. RJF’s role was to support every aspect of the Commission, working closely with the research team and independent members, including engaging stakeholders, managing the production of the report and publishing the findings.

Its multi million pound estates strategy will see it move into new campus buildings in the city centre Eastside Quarter. In particular, RJF has helped BCU launch the Perry Barr Task Force, a community engagement programme to work with residents , businesses and community leaders in Perry Barr, where BCU’s current campus site will eventually become available for major redevelopment opportunities.

Watkin Jones is one of the leading developers and builders of student accommodation in the UK. In 2011 it brought forward plans to bring back to life the former Central Fire Station in Birmingham by converting the Grade II listed building and building a new tower within the station’s drill yard. The radical development plans in such a sensitive site needed careful navigation through the planning process, and RJF helped Watkin Jones in its engagement with political stakeholders, business leaders and community groups. The development was given the green light in December 2012, having won praise from councillors and conservation groups, and is expected to welcome its first student residents in the autumn term of 2014.
